IMMERSION WALL

brief

When Herman Miller was faced with the increasing costs of showroom real estate, they needed to find a way to show more office furniture in less space. They had a short time frame, wanting to introduce the system at the 2001 Neocon Trade Fair in Chicago.

solution

Core77 conceived, designed, programmed and art-directed a 70-foot interactive video wall composed of 12 rear-projection video cubes and multiple wireless joystick controls. The "Immersion Wall" allows three simultaneous users to select and navigate dozens of office furniture environments, utilizing rotation, zoom, and fly-through motions. However, the environments shown are not "virtual;" they are actual photographic environments using tried-and-true QuickTime VR technology. As such, they provide very real and honest representations of offices outfitted with Herman Miller products.

Much of the wall's effectiveness is due to its scale: since the environments appear full-size in front of the user, the immersive quality is optimized. The interactivity is enhanced through the use of sophisticated sound design with focused overhead speaker cones and ambient sounds.

Following the Neocon Trade Fair, Core77 redesigned the wall application as a CD-ROM based software for use by salespeople in the showrooms and dealerships around the globe.
